Katie has cancer.
She's down on her knees crying out to God, asking him why he's doing this to her, what did she do to deserve this...saying that she's been faithful to him.
\\ // split stage, two guys from Katie's school are talking in the cafeteria at school, and about God and the bible.
Katie:
(obviously upset, in hospital gown, looks weak)
Why?
Why do I have to go through this, God? I've been faithful to you!
Why are you punishing me? What did I do? What didn't I do?
I'm only 17, why...(choking up) cancer?
Every other person at my school is studying for finals and picking out what college they want to get into, going out with friends, having a good time, and I'm stuck in the hospital, DYING.
WHY DO YOU HATE ME, GOD? I was a witness for you!
Even after I found out, I still had faith you would cure me of this.
I don't want to die. I wanted to do your work, I wanted to help people...
why are you letting me die?? (breaks down and sobs, lights shift to other side of the stage) .
[the guys are in a "school cafeteria" setting...]
Jim:
(goes to sit next to Bobby, who is looking down, deep in thought, and has a stack of 3 or 4 books w/a bible on the bottom)
Bobby, are you okay man?
Bobby:
Hey Jim...um, not really.
Jim:
What's wrong? You did study for your Chemistry exam, right?
Bobby:
Yeah. I was just thinking about Katie Denton.
Jim:
Katie who?
Bobby:
You know, Katie, from Mr. Andrews' class?
Jim:
Katie...Denton...
Bobby:
The girl with cancer.
Jim:
Oh, the one who always carried her bible around everywhere? (smirks).
Bobby:
Yeah, that's Katie.
Jim:
What about her?
Bobby:
It just doesn't seem fair for someone that nice to get such a horrible disease.
Jim:
LIFE'S not fair, Bobby.
Bobby:
But you know what's really amazing, Jim? Her faith.
Jim:
Her faith...?
Bobby:
She's always had such a strong hope and faith in God. Even after she found out she had cancer. She said that there must be a reason for it.
Jim:
Yeah, well, that's a nice theory I suppose.
Bobby:
(pulls a Bible out from the bottom of his stack of books)
Have you ever read any of this thing, Jim?
Jim:
A Bible? Where'd you get that from? (Takes Bible, looks inside)
...Dude, you stole Katie Denton's Bible?!
Bobby:
I didn't steal it, I found it. She must have accidentally left it in Mr. Andrews' class one of those times when she was well enough to come pick up her assignments. I found it last week, and I've been checking it out.
You know, it's actually pretty cool!
Jim:
Don't tell me you're actually starting to believe some of this stuff?
Bobby:
I do, Jim. I really do. After seeing the way Katie handled finding out she had cancer and seeing how comforted she was just believing in her God, I wanted to know more about it. And then when I found her bible, I felt compelled to open it up and start reading it.
I need to get this one back to Katie somehow and buy my own, I know, but...
Jim: interrupting Bobby...
So, ARE you?
Bobby:
Am I what?
Jim:
A Christian?
Bobby:
I prayed the prayer of salvation last night, Jim. And I feel like a new person! My life has meaning now!
Jim:
Well, I've always been curious about this stuff. I just never really knew anyone else who was into it... It just seems really iffy.
Bobby:
Jim, it's all about a personal relationship with Jesus, and God. It's awesome!
Jim:
Well, maybe we can talk about it more later tonight. We'd better get to class though.
Bobby:
Sounds good, bro. Hope you ace your test.
Jim:
You too, man.
(do a handshake, they exit stage).
lights back to Katie's side of stage, she resumes movement...
Katie:
I just don't understand, God. There has to be a reason...but what IS it??
